The Birth

I went to the doctors on Monday the 26th to see if I had made any progress. At that point my cervix was still closed and hard, so the doctor decided that we needed to induce. She called the hospital and got me a room for the following night, check in time was 8:00p.m. The next day I was pretty restless knowing it was going to be my last day at home without the baby, so I tried to clean, but I had been doing that for weeks, so I ended up on the couch watching T.V. Chris got home from work and we got everything packed up and in the car. We went to dinner at Cracker Barrel, went to Best Buy and bought a DS (my Christmas gift), and headed to the hospital. We got to the hospital about 45 minutes early and they did not have the room ready for us yet. So, we sat in the waiting room and watched a DVD on the laptop. Finally, we were put into the room, and I was given Cervidal (sp?) to soften my cervix, put on an IV with saline, and the baby was put on a monitor. We went to sleep about 10 (poor Chris had to sleep in a very uncomfortable recliner like chair). The next day the doctor came in to see what the Cervadil had done to my cervix and I was dilated a fingertip, so she stretched me to a centimeter. Here is a timeline from that point:
9:00 given Pitocin to start contractions
10:00 Had to turn on my side because babys heart rate was decelerating with the contractions. Contractions were coming about every 5 minutes.
1:00 The doctor broke my water (which was really unglamorous) and shortly thereafter the contractions started coming one right after another. I had a catheter put into my uterus because of myconium (the baby had pooped in utero) and had fluids draining out of me (really gross!!!!)
1:30 The babys heartrate was not reacting well to the fact that my contractions were coming so fast and hard so they turned of the Pitocin and gave me a drug to counteract it. I contracted on my own from that point, and they were coming about every 5 minutes.
4:00 Doctor checked my cervix, I was still only 1cm dilated, so they started me back on the Pitocin. My contractions then started coming about every 2 to 3 minutes.
9:00 Checked my cervix again, I only dilated to 2cm and the baby had not dropped into position because he was posterior. Because of the timing and intensity of my contractions and the fact that the baby had not dropped the doctor decided it would be best to have a C-section. The nurse prepped me and Chris and his parents got all our stuff moved to the postpartum room.
9:45 Got Spinal (weirdest feeling in the world!!!) Started surgery shortly thereafter, Chris watched the whole thing and gave me a play by play. Apparently, when it is time to take baby out, two doctors are on either side of the incision pulling on it and another is pulling out the baby.
10:12 p.m. Corey Allen DeRosier enters this world and we are both completely in love! I get to see baby for a short time, then I am stitched up and wheeled off to the recovery room which closely resembled a storage closet.
12:30 left recovery room, although I had not gotten complete feeling back in my legs, because baby needed to be fed. He made a liar out of the nursery lady because he fell asleep as soon as I got there.
3:00 Chris changed his very FIRST poopy diaper and went through half a bag of wipes!!!!!!
5:30 Baby finally ate (I was up this whole time trying to get him to eat) then was taken to the nursery because his temperature was down and he needed to be put under the warmer.
I was too excited and itchy (the medicine that counteracts the epidural does that) to sleep, so I laid in bed until 7:45 when they brought the baby back in the room. The rest of the hospital stay was what it was. I was locked in a room with Chris for 3 days, but we survived without a scratch. I think we were both to excited and happy to let anything bother us (until it was time to go home, but that is another story). We had A LOT of visitors and are happy to be home now!
